Statement delivered by Shri Rajiv K Chander, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India during the UNGA High Level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, at Palais des Nations, Geneva

  •      H.E. Mr. António Guterres, UN Secretary General, the Chair for today’s UNGA High Level pledging event,
  • At the outset, I would like to thank His Excellency Mr. Didier Burkhalter, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation and Her Excellency Ms. Margot Wallstrom, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden for co-hosting this event along with UN. I would also like to compliment the UNSG for his tireless efforts towards ensuring humanitarian assistance to people in need and giving them a voice.
  1. India recognizes the extraordinary humanitarian challenges currently being faced by our brothers and sisters in Yemen. As a friend of Yemen with close historical ties and people to people linkages, I would like to place on record India’s unequivocal support for peace, security, stability and the territorial integrity of Yemen. 

Hon’ble Chair, 

  1. India remains committed to extending all possible assistance to Yemen. India is already a member of the ‘Friends of Yemen’ Group, formed to strengthen international efforts in assisting Yemen during these testing times. 
  1. India supplied rice worth USD 2 million in August 2012 through World Food Programme. Similarly, wheat valued at another USD 2 million was delivered through World Food Programme in November 2013.  At Yemen’s request, India provided essential medicines and medical consumables in March 2015.  A number of Yemeni citizens have regularly been provided medical treatment in India. India remains committed to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen through bilateral means.    
  1. In conclusion, I would like to wish the friendly people of Yemen continued progress, peace and prosperity and reassure them of India’s support as the country traverses through a critical phase.
