PERMANENT MISSION OF INDIA TO THE UN, GENEVA

29th SESSION of the HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

(15 June to 3 July 2015)

Draft Resolution titled

'Human Rights Situation of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar

Draft General Statement by India

Mr. President,

1. My delegation makes this General Statement in response to the draft resolution titled 'Human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar' under the Agenda Item 2.

2. We have serious concerns on the draft resolution, which focuses on issues that are sectarian in nature. The consideration of such issues in this Council has the propensity to make the Council's agenda more divisive. Such an approach is best avoided keeping in view our collective desire to make the Council a place for constructive and collaborative engagement of countries for protection and promotion of human rights.

Mr. President,

3. With respect to Rakhine state, we have noted that the Government of Myanmar has taken steps towards restoration of law and order and has expressed readiness to cooperate with UN & other humanitarian agencies regarding rehabilitation of those affected by violence.

4. We believe that Myanmar has adopted a constructive engagement with international community by explaining the efforts of the Government of Myanmar in addressing the issues highlighted here.

5. As the draft resolution under consideration is highly prescriptive and not consistent with the broad ethos of the work of this Council, my delegation will also disassociate from the draft resolution and its contents.

I thank you. Mr. President.
