Statement by India

Thank you, Mr. President,

India welcomes the delegation of Guinea led by Minister of Human Rights and Civil Liberties, H.E. Mr. KhalifaGassamaDiaby.

 

Mr. President,

2. We deeply appreciate the candid acknowledgementof the Government of Guinea of the numerous challenges faced by it in maintaining the fragile peace and political stability, ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and pursuing socio-economic development of its people. We particularly acknowledge the huge burden that the ongoing Ebola health crisis is having on its institutions and economy.

 

3. We commend theeffortsundertaken by Guinea towards establishing a genuinely constitutional state, improving judicial independence, strengthening rule of law and consolidation of democracy through the successful and peaceful completion of presidential and legislative elections under the new constitution. We appreciate the steps taken to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for the protection and promotion of human rights including ratification of most of the international human rights treaties, the creation of a separate Ministry of Human Right and Civil Liberties and the establishment of a National Human Rights Institution.

 

4. We take positive note of the measures being implemented to promote gender equality in education, health and employment and in combating traditional practices that are harmful to women and children in particular female genital mutilation.We recommend the Government of Guinea to redouble its efforts to advance women’s rights and eliminate harmful practices.

 

5. As it emerges successful in controlling the Ebola outbreak,it is critical that the international community ensures to assist Guinea in further strengthening of its health systems to prevent future recurrence of any public health crisis. In this regard, we recommend Guinea to continue to engage with the international community and relevant international organizations and seek technical and financial assistance for institutional capacity building and strengthening public health systems.

 

6. We wish the delegation and the government of Guinea all success in its future endeavours.
