Statement by India

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Iraq for the adoption of the report of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Iraq held on 3rd November 2014. We thank the delegation for its statement providing an update on the report of Iraq's second review under UPR.

2. We commend Iraq for the receptive and constructive manner in which it participated in the UPR mechanism. The review reflected the intense participation and engagement by peer countries, with as many as 90 delegations taking the floor and 229 recommendations addressed to Iraq that cover a range of human rights both in the realm of promotion and protection.

3. It is encouraging to note that Iraq accepted as many as 175 of these recommendations including all the three that were made by our delegation.

4. India believes that Iraq has gained much from its participation in the UPR and will continue with its efforts to implement the recommendations accepted by it in the coming years. While recommending the adoption of the report on its UPR, we warmly congratulate Iraq for its successful review and wish it all success in its present and future endeavors.

Thank you, Mr. President.
