Discourse on Good Governance and Human Rights

10 July 2023

A Discourse on “Good Governance and Human Rights” was organized by Permanent Mission of India to the UN and other International Organisations at Palais des Nations on 10 July 2023 at 1600 hrs. CET.   Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, PR of India to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva delivered Welcome Remarks; Ms. Rebecca Grynspan, Secretary General, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) addressed the participants as Keynote Speaker. 

Shri Bharat Lal, Secretary General, National Human Rights Commission of India made a presentation on Good Governance and Human Rights and highlighted that India attaches equal importance to all the basic human rights, which are enshrined in the Constitution. He stressed that there is social and political inclusion in India and that there is a paradigm shift from women empowerment to women-led  development.

Shri K. Rajaraman, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, Government of India made a presentation on India’s success in leveraging digital technology.  He laid focus on social and geographical inclusion, economic inclusion and India’s Digital Public Infrastructure. He added that use of digital technologies enables social, economic and political inclusion while at the same time it overcomes social, cultural, gender and geographical barriers. He stressed that India’s digital story provides an example for other countries from Global South & India is committed to assist them.  He outlined how India has been successful in bringing about digital transformation through imaginative use of digital technologies and that India is also ready to share its digital public goods. 

A video message from Prof. Surya Deva, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development was played.  The Discourse, which was participated by members of the international community including Ambassadors/PRs, concluded with a Q&A / Interactive Session.
